The series SPEECHES, YOU, TUBE AND I KNOW is a tribute to iconic speakers and historical moments whose words have shaped collective memory. It is based on historical and contemporary speeches sourced from online video platforms, including, for example, Neil Armstrong’s famous words upon stepping onto the moon.
At the core of the series is an experimental scanning process in which digital moving images are transformed into analog visual traces. For the setup, a flatbed scanner is placed directly on the surface of a monitor rotated by 90 degrees, while the selected speech video plays. The scanner continuously scans the screen in real time. Through deliberate manipulation of the scanner driver, the scanning process is dramatically slowed so that a single scan lasts six minutes.
As the video plays, the interplay of image motion and scan duration produces visual distortions, elongations, and abstract structures. The speakers’ faces, gestures, and movements dissolve into horizontal streaks, rhythmic patterns, and layered temporal landscapes. Cinematic time is not frozen but translated into a visual time track — a continuum of language, gesture, and digital noise.
SPEECHES, YOU, TUBE AND I KNOW explores the materiality of political and cultural communication, the aesthetics of mediated history, and the transformation of historical moments into new visual forms. By converting the digital flow of speech into analog traces, a reflective distance is created: the words vanish, while gestures remain — abstracted, displaced, and newly legible.

Die Serie SPEECHES, YOU, TUBE AND I KNOW ist eine Hommage an berühmte Redner:innen und zugleich eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der medialen Zirkulation historischer Bilder und Stimmen im digitalen Zeitalter. Ausgangspunkt sind ikonische Reden, die über Internetplattformen wie YouTube recherchiert und ausgewählt wurden – etwa Neil Armstrongs Worte bei der Mondlandung.
Für den Versuchsaufbau wurde ein Flachbettscanner auf die Oberfläche eines um 90° gedrehten Monitors gelegt. Während der Monitor das jeweilige Video wiedergibt, tastet der Scanner die gesamte Bildfläche ab. Die Geschwindigkeit des Scanvorgangs wurde durch eine Manipulation des Scanner-Treibers drastisch reduziert, sodass ein einziger Scan sechs Minuten dauert. Auf diese Weise wird das bewegte Bild der Rede in einen zeitlich gedehnten, linearen Bildraum transformiert.
Die so entstandenen Scans sind keine klassischen Filmstills, sondern visuelle Verdichtungen, in denen Zeit, Bewegung und rhetorischer Ausdruck zu einer fließenden Spur verschmelzen. Gesten, Mimik und visuelle Artefakte der digitalen Übertragung werden zu abstrakten Strukturen, die die Energie und Atmosphäre des gesprochenen Wortes in eine neue, nicht-lineare Bildsprache übersetzen.
SPEECHES, YOU, TUBE AND I KNOW reflektiert die Frage, wie kollektive Erinnerung heute über digitale Bilder vermittelt wird und wie sich die Aura einer historischen Rede verändert, wenn sie durch technische Verfahren fragmentiert, verzerrt und neu zusammengesetzt wird.
