The FROZEN TIKTOK series is based on 13 videos from the viral archive “TOP 50 Most Liked TikToks of All Time! Nov 2020,” which circulated across various social networks. The selection gathers globally successful, highly algorithmically driven short videos that, through their massive reach and interaction numbers, can be understood as expressions of digital attention economies.

As part of a performative process, these 50 reels were captured in real time with a handheld scanner while being played on a smartphone. The scanner was moved manually over the display, translating the moving digital images into analog, fragmented traces. In this way, 50 hand-guided scans were created—visual residues of extremely accelerated, high-resolution digital moments.

The resulting image files were then transferred onto photosensitive paper, embedded in a custom-made silicone mold of the scanned smartphone, and sealed with UV-resistant epoxy resin.

The resulting sculptures function as hybrid relics of the digital present. Each scan transforms the fleeting stream of digital images into a tangible form of deceleration—frozen traces of light, pixels, and time. At the same time, the distorted, streaked image fragments reveal that digital content can never be fully translated into the analog. The breaks and artifacts that occur during the scanning process become aesthetic markers of translation loss, media reflection, and the gaps in digital memory.

FROZEN TIKTOK explores the materialization of ephemeral image cultures and examines how collective visual memories form at the intersection of permanence and impermanence, visibility and control, digitality and corporeality. The series operates at the interface of performance, sculpture, photography, and media archaeology, transforming viral media phenomena into contemplative objects that alter the perception of images.

Die Werkgruppe FROZEN TIKTOK basiert auf den 13 Videos des viralen Archivs „TOP 50 Most Liked TikToks of All Time ! Nov 2020“, das sich über verschiedene soziale Netzwerke verbreitete. Die Auswahl versammelt weltweit erfolgreiche, stark algorithmisch geprägte Kurzvideos, die durch ihre enorme Reichweite und Interaktionszahlen als Ausdruck digitaler Aufmerksamkeitsökonomien verstanden werden können.

Im Rahmen einer performativen Handlung wurden diese 50 Reels in Echtzeit mit einem mobilen Handscanner erfasst, während sie auf einem Smartphone abgespielt wurden. Der Scanner bewegte sich manuell über das Display und übertrug die bewegten digitalen Bilder in analoge, fragmentierte Spuren. Auf diese Weise entstanden 50 handgeführte Scans – visuelle Rückstände extrem beschleunigter und hochauflösender digitaler Bildmomente.

Die daraus hervorgegangenen Bilddateien wurden anschließend auf lichtempfindliches Fotopapier übertragen, in eine eigens angefertigte Silikonform des gescannten Smartphones eingebettet und mit UV-beständigem Epoxidharz versiegelt.

Die entstandenen Skulpturen fungieren als hybride Reliquien einer digitalen Gegenwart. Jeder einzelne Scan transformiert den flüchtigen Strom digitaler Bilder in eine materielle Form der Verlangsamung – eingefrorene Spuren aus Licht, Pixeln und Zeit. Gleichzeitig machen die verzerrten, streifenartigen Bildfragmente sichtbar, dass digitale Inhalte sich nie vollständig ins Analoge übersetzen lassen. Die im Scanprozess auftretenden Brüche und Artefakte werden dabei zu ästhetischen Zeichen von Übersetzungsverlust, medialer Reflexion und den Leerstellen digitaler Erinnerung.

FROZEN TIKTOK untersucht die Materialisierung ephemerer Bildkulturen und fragt danach, wie sich kollektive Bildspeicher zwischen Dauer und Vergänglichkeit, Sichtbarkeit und Kontrolle sowie Digitalität und Körperlichkeit formieren. Die Werkgruppe bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von Performance, Skulptur, Fotografie und Medienarchäologie und überführt virale Medienphänomene in kontemplative Objekte einer transformierten Wahrnehmung von Bildern.
