The source material for the work series FROZEN TIKTOK consists of the 50 videos from the viral archive “TOP 50 Most Liked TikToks of All Time ! Nov 2020”, which circulated widely across various social media platforms. The selection includes highly algorithm-driven, globally successful short videos that can be understood as visual manifestations of the digital attention economy—organized by metrics such as likes, views, and shares.

As part of a performance, the 50 reels were scanned in real time using a handheld scanner while being played on a smartphone. The scanner was manually moved across the screen, translating the moving image into analog, fragmented visual traces. This process resulted in 50 hand-guided scans—each a visual residue of a hyper-accelerated, high-resolution digital moment.

The resulting image files were transferred onto light-sensitive photographic paper, placed into a custom-made silicone mold of the scanned smartphon, and cast in UV-resistant epoxy resin.

The sculptures that emerge from this process are hybrid relics of the digital age, and each scan becomes a material deceleration of the fleeting torrent of digital imagery—a frozen stream of light, pixels, and time. At the same time, the distorted, strip-like image formations point to the impossibility of fully translating digital content into analog form: the ruptures and artifacts of the scanning process become aesthetic metaphors for loss in translation, media critique, and the gaps in our digital memory.

FROZEN TIKTOK addresses the materialization of ephemeral image cultures and raises the question of how collective visual memory inscribes itself within the tensions between permanence and disappearance, visibility and control, digitality and embodiment. The series operates at the intersection of performance, sculpture, photography, and media archaeology—transforming viral media phenomena into contemplative objects of altered image perception.

Das Ausgangsmaterial der Werkgruppe FROZEN TIKTOK bilden die 13 Videos des viralen Archivs “TOP 50 Most Liked TikToks of All Time ! Nov 2020”, das über diverse soziale Netzwerke zirkulierte. Die Auswahl umfasst hochgradig algorithmisierte, global erfolgreiche Kurzvideos, die – durch Likes, Views und Shares – als visuelle Manifestationen digitaler Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie gelten können.

Im Rahmen einer Performance wurden diese 50 Reels mit einem mobilen Handscanner in Echtzeit eingescannt, während sie auf einem Smartphone abgespielt wurden. Der Scanner fuhr dabei manuell über dessen Display und übersetzte das bewegte Bildmaterial in analoge, fragmentierte Bildspuren. So entstanden 50 handgeführte Scans – jedes ein visuelles Residuum eines durchweg beschleunigten, hochauflösenden digitalen Moments.

Die daraus resultierenden Bilddateien wurden auf lichtempfindliches Fotopapier übertragen, in eine eigens angefertigte Silikonform des eingescannten Smartphones gelegt und mit UV-beständigem Epoxidharz ausgegossen.

Die Skulpturen sind hybride Reliquien des digitalen Zeitalters und jeder Scan wird zu einer materiellen Verlangsamung der flüchtigen, digitalen Bilderflut – ein eingefrorener Strom aus Licht, Pixeln und Zeit. Zugleich verweisen die entstellten, streifenartigen Bildwelten auf die Unmöglichkeit, digitale Inhalte vollständig analog zu fassen: Die Brüche und Artefakte im Scanprozess werden zu ästhetischen Metaphern für Übersetzungsverlust, Medienkritik und Erinnerungslücken im digitalen Gedächtnis.

FROZEN TIKTOK thematisiert die Materialisierung flüchtiger Bildkulturen und stellt die Frage, wie sich kollektive Bildgedächtnisse im Spannungsfeld zwischen Dauer und Verschwinden, Sichtbarkeit und Kontrolle, Digitalität und Körperlichkeit einschreiben. Die Werkgruppe operiert im Grenzbereich von Performance, Skulptur, Fotografie und Medienarchäologie – und transformiert virale Medienphänomene in kontemplative Objekte einer veränderten Bildwahrnehmung.
